Tips for wisdom tooth removal aftercare

Bleeding.

Redness in the saliva and slight bleeding after your wisdom teeth removal are common. However, if you are bleeding excessively, you can stop it by putting a gauze pad on the surgical site and biting softly for 20-30 minutes.

If the bleeding still continues, take a moistened tea bag and bite over it for another 20 minutes. Tea bags consist of tannic acid, which contracts blood vessels and prevents clotting.

Pain.

Unfortunately, pain is something that you will always experience after dental surgery. Slight pain can be countered with medications such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc. However, you should not take these medicines without your doctor’s prescription. Taking them in excessive amounts can have severe side effects on your oral and overall health. Also, while taking these medications, avoid consuming alcohol. If the pain still persists, contact your dentist immediately.

Massage your jaw.

Your mouth is held wide open while you are having your wisdom tooth removal surgery. Opening it for such a long time can result in a condition called lockjaw. Your muscles get sore and cramped, which results in myofascial pain. The muscle that helps you chew food may get sore after your tooth removal surgery. Massaging your jaw slightly will help you counter the pain and result in faster recovery.

Swelling.

Swelling may be experienced on the sides of your face, around your mouth, cheeks, and eyes. This is a typical response of the body following surgery and eventual healing. It will not take long for swelling to start the day after surgery and take two to three days to reach its peak.

You can use ice to reduce the swelling. Sometimes, blood flowing beneath the tissues causes discolorations. However, you do not need to worry as this is common, and moist heat can help.

Nausea.

If you experience nausea or vomiting after your wisdom tooth removal surgery, avoid taking anything, even if it is water, until you recover from nausea. You can start eating after the nausea has resolved. If you still feel nauseated after 12 hours, call your doctor immediately.

If you are experiencing discomfort after your wisdom tooth removal, you do not have to sit and endure the pain. Do not hesitate to visit your dentist today!
